What I now realize, after what was first just my weekend getaway to my modest “casita” with no window, walls or doors, has become a very special program in rural/agro tourism supported by a guided tour we named the Santa Juana Rural Mountain Adventure sharing the natural attractions and hospitality that drew me hear myself nearly 10 years ago.
Costa Rica rural tourism
Everyone, including Costa Ricans, are impressed and enlightened by the tranquil atmosphere and warm and inviting hospitality of rural life, including the lush mountain landscape and amazing vistas overlooking the Pacific coastline below.
The customer tour feedback became the most consistent and highly rated from visitors of every background, including Tico’s who re-discover their own rural heritage. Just the trip by 4 x 4 vehicles is considered part of the adventure, and the village ladies, who prepare the Campesino meals, enjoy generous tips and praises.
That extends to the Nature Interpreters (guides), Horse Wranglers and other village staff who together provide an exceptional Costa Rica experience, year after year where we all benefit in every meaning of the term of Sustainable Tourism.
I am happy to report that since we began, the tours continue to hit homeruns and the proceeds benefit thousands of native trees we’ve planted and care for, along with many other conservation efforts to help protect the flora, fauna and valuable watershed. Add the self-esteem and awareness that’s brought a dormant village back to life again, and a simple idea to find some jobs for locals has become the main source of revenue and identity for the community.
